Two opposing musical forces, vertical and horizontal, are present throughout this piece.
The vertical music consists of tightly spaced chords which are usually performed without any affect or emotion. In contrast, the horizontal music is presented as long, stable, single pitches. At the beginning of the work, the two forces are trapped within each other. As the music progresses, the two separate and exist in their purest forms.
